What happens when a pensioner dies?

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

When a pensioner dies after retiring on pension, their benefits will no longer be payable.

To prevent any overpayment of pension, and to help us determine if any dependants benefits are payable, the deceased's spouse, civil partner, eligible cohabiting partner, next-of-kin or person dealing with their Estate should immediately:

  • inform the Fund of the death online, or
  • contact our Payroll Team on 0151 242 1399 (Mon-Fri 9am - 5pm)

The benefits which may be payable on a pensioner's death are dependant on when they left the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS).
