Pensions for Councillors and Mayors (Elected Members)

The Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) provides pension benefits for Councillors and Mayors (referred to as ‘elected members’) in England from 11 May 2026. 
 
You are eligible to join if you receive an allowance or salary from Knowsley Council, Liverpool City Council, Sefton Council, St. Helens Council, Wirral Council, or Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service. The Liverpool City Region Mayor is also eligible to join. 
 
PLEASE NOTE:
As an elected member, if you wish to join the LGPS, you must opt into the Scheme by completing the 'Elected members: Election to join the Local Government Pension Scheme' form shown below. This form must be returned to the authority who directly pays the allowance to you and not Merseyside Pension Fund.
