SCHEDULED BODIES
A scheduled body is a statutorily defined body within the terms of the Scheme's Regulations and has a statutory obligation to participate in the Scheme.
If you work for a scheduled body be it in a full-time or part-time capacity, have a contract or employment of 3 months or more and are under age 75, you have the RIGHT to be a member of the Scheme. You should automatically be entered into the LGPS from your first day of employment by your employer.
If you start work with your employer with an initial contract of less than 3 months and then receive an extension beyond 3 months, you should be brought into the Scheme from the date of the extension and be given the option to backdate your entry.
Membership isn't compulsory however - you can cancel your membership at any time. We sometimes call this 'opting-out'.
Most people will nearly always be better off by joining their employer's occupational pension scheme and your employer, union and the government all recommend that you join.
